Bardenas Reales, the desert at the foot of Navarra.
Bardenas Reales is the most unexpected landscape in the “Kingdom of Green.” It is a 42,500-hectare Natural Park, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
The Bardenas Reales are designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, meaning you will enter a natural area of great biological richness where sustainable development and respect for the environment are promoted.
Its landscape and biodiversity resemble areas of North Africa more than the north of the Iberian Peninsula. In the past, this territory was home to species that are now extinct, such as crocodiles and turtles, and today it hosts a very diverse wildlife.
In the Bardenas Reales you can find eagles, vultures, owls, bustards, foxes, wildcats, genets, as well as numerous amphibians and reptiles living among shrubs, sisal fields, salt flats and esparto grasslands. A true oasis… but in reverse: a desert full of life.
Its extensive network of tracks and paths — including the historic Cañada Real de los Roncaleses coming from the Pyrenees — allows visitors to explore the area on foot, by bike or through marked routes.
The Bardenas Reales can be visited on foot, by bicycle, in authorised vehicles and also through guided buggy experiences, always respecting the Natural Park regulations.

The areas of the Bardenas Reales: El Plano, La Negra and La Blanca
The main access to the Natural Park is from the town of Arguedas, although there are other secondary entrances. Inside the park there are three main areas, each with very different characteristics:

El Plano
A large horizontal plateau located in the northern and western areas, mainly dedicated to agriculture and characterised by its open landscape.

La Negra
Located in the south, it is formed by horizontal reliefs covered with pine forests and shrubland, offering a greener and more enclosed environment.

La Blanca
Situated between El Plano and La Negra, it is the most eroded area. It is also the most photographed and visited, as it contains the park’s most spectacular formations such as Castildetierra or Pisquerra, recognisable settings from many films and audiovisual productions.
